Multiple Solutions, a Disability Employment Services provider, and Café 91 have teamed up in a great new initiative creating a brilliant employment opportunity for Ned, a young man who has spent four years desperately searching for paid work.
Ned spent years volunteering for various businesses, in the hopes of finding a place that would take him on as a paid employee. Deflated from searching for work for years with no success, Ned joined Multiple Solutions in March.
After discussing Ned’s skills and goals, his Multiple Solutions Employment Consultant, Marty uncovered Ned’s interest and enthusiasm towards barista work. He had undertaken some volunteer work in a café previously and really loved the experience. So, Marty enrolled Ned into a two-day accredited Barista workshop with Independent Institute. Ned was so excited that after less than a week with Multiple Solutions, he was already one step closer to pursuing a career in hospitality.
Connecting through the Salisbury Business Awards in September, Multiple Solutions staff and Independent Institute owners, Susan and Stefan spoke about the determined young man who had just recently completed his Barista course with them at their Salisbury training facility.
They discussed how they could work together to provide an employment opportunity for Ned at Café 91, Independent Institute’s training café, which would not only give Ned his first ever paid job but would also attract more customers to Café 91 and have a positive impact in the Salisbury community.
Multiple Solutions Regional Manager, Sarah says, “It was clear to us that Susan and Stefan shared our same values and passion to provide support to people and businesses in the local Salisbury community.”
“We had trialed a similar initiative with a business in Southern Adelaide, with great success. The passionate and supportive workplace at Café 91 is a great match for Ned and a fantastic opportunity to kickstart his career in the hospitality industry.”
Marty supported Ned to prepare for his interview at Café 91 which went extremely well. He got the job! Ned’s confidence had skyrocketed, with Multiple Solutions helping him to purchase his work uniform and navigate his first week of work.
Three weeks into his role at Café 91 and Ned has already secured several regular customers and is doing a great job of marketing the café to local businesses in the area. Café 91 Owner, Susan Knoll says they are already thinking of new ways Ned can help to promote the business.
“Our sales have been some of the best which is thanks to Ned’s advertising as well as better systems and procedures in place. He’s getting the word out there advertising our specials for the day, promoting and marketing the business which can only be a good thing,” Susan says.
Ned says that he just loves being able to work and it is so satisfying to make a contribution to his local community. Things like paying taxes and relying less on Centrelink payments are hugely rewarding.
Ned says, “The best part of my job is that I get to move around a lot meeting many new people in the local Salisbury community. I feel like I’m getting a lot accomplished and being recognised as I move about the Salisbury business district.”
“It’s very rewarding to be doing something I like and to be fortunate enough to be paid for the experience. The support I’ve received from Multiple Solutions and the management and staff at Café 91 has made this experience the most rewarding of my life.”
